Using an Electric Chainsaw - Pros & Cons
Do you have a couple of backyard projects that need a chainsaw? Are you a little intimidated by the size and weight of a gas powered chainsaw? An electric chainsaw, on the other hand, may be just what you need. Advantages of an Electric Chainsaw. Several advantages make an electric chainsaw a better choice for the ordinary homeowner. Here are the considerations: 1. Lower Weight No doubt, the most beneficial difference with electric chainsaws is their lighter weight by comparison. 2. Less Fatigue For several reasons, gas-chainsaws can lead to tiring. Cutting with heavy, cumbersome chainsaws often causes fatigue and is one of the biggest complaints cited by consumers. Home use, however, is much more manageable with an electric chainsaw because of their smaller and lighter configuration. 3. Cheaper to Buy and Maintain You'll find that electric chainsaws cost less to buy and maintain than gas-powered saws. They also have a lower cost to operate, and eliminate repeat trips to the gas station. 4. They're Quieter You'll enjoy much less noise with an electric chainsaw as opposed to gas driven. You'll be less likely to disturb your neighbors. 5. Friendly to the Environment There are no toxic emmissions into the environment from electric chainsaws. 6. Greater Safety A major advantage of working with an electric chainsaw is the reduced risk of kickback, a potentially life-threatening situation occurring when the saw’s bar jerks back toward the user after the bar’s end hits some obstruction. Since electrics operate with reduced power, the potential for deadly kickback is lower. 7. Easier to Start Starting an electric chainsaw is much easier. Disadvantages of an Electric Chainsaw As you might imagine, electric chainsaws are not without their disadvantages. 1. Not as Much Power An electric chainsaw is noticeably low on power when compared with the two-cycle engines of more powerful gasoline chainsaws. As mentioned earlier, they are suitable for lighter garden and homeowner use, and not for heavier cutting requiting a gas saw. 2. Not as Mobile The length of the cord and location of the power source determines the mobility of the saw-operator and it is not feasible for him/her to use it far from the power source or away from the home. In Summary You should be mindful that these saws are made for lighter use more suitable for work around the average yard. You shouldn't attempt to cut down a 150-year-old oak tree with it! An electric chainsaw simply is not appropriate for use in deep woods and for heavier cutting jobs requiring greater power. An electric chainsaw is certainly a solid choice for the average homeowner. |
